You deal with me, start to finish

Barnabas Kecskes

Barnabas, Founder

I'm Barnabas Kecskes, a senior software developer based in Telford, with 15 years building in-house admin systems for businesses. I started in 2011 and set up Riverskies in 2014, and most of that work has turned out to be the same thing: systems that take repetitive admin off people's desks and cut out the errors that come with it. You can see examples of that work. You can also find me on LinkedIn.

One of those clients asked me to join them full time in 2019, after several years as their contractor, to lead the move of their processes onto software. I'm still their Head of Development, leading a team of senior developers doing exactly this kind of work at scale. The team is currently building a subscription suite that lets customers go self-service.

I'm now making time to help a small number of businesses in Shropshire with the same problems. There's no account manager or junior hand-off: the person you speak to on the first call is the person who does the work.

The wrong brief

What changed how I work

On one project I spent two months building a system to a brief that had been signed off two years earlier by people who had left the company. The business was slow because every quote, which took about a week to get out, went through the one engineer who understood the maths. A tool I put together in an afternoon, almost as an aside, turned out to be closer to what the business actually needed.

Nobody on that project was careless. The specification simply had never been checked against how the work was really done. That's the value I offer now: starting with the people doing the job, not with someone else's brief.

Start with a 20-minute call

I take on one or two new clients a month. Tell me which task takes the most time, and I'll look at how the work is really done and tell you honestly whether it's worth fixing.
